Wikimedia & UN Human Rights launch the #WikiForHumanRights campaign

10 December 2019

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, the Wikimedia Foundation and UN Human Rights are launching the #WikiForHumanRights global campaign, which will focus on improving information about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and youth empowerment and action in human rights.

This partnership aims to make human rights knowledge more accessible and reach out to communities around the world. Wikimedia and UN Human Rights will co-host local editathons on important topics, bringing together contributors to create or improve human rights content on Wikipedia. Several Wikimedia communities will be participating worlwide in the editathons to make quality articles about human rights available.

The initiative will also promote the human rights to freedom of expression and information. It will engage contributors and communities around human rights issues, and, as a result, ensure people everywhere know about and understand human rights. New content will be created in multiple languages and highlight local contexts to resonate with wide audiences.

  • I will respect your rights regardless of who you are. I will uphold your rights even when I disagree with you
  • When anyone’s human rights are denied, everyone's rights are undermined, so I will stand up
  • I will raise my voice. I will take action. I will use my rights to stand up for your rights.
